The Pros And Cons Of Different Types Of Braces: Choosing The Best Option For A Straighter Smile 1024 629 Peak Orthodontics

Are you looking to achieve a straighter smile with orthodontic treatment? If so, find out here about the types of orthodontic treatments and braces available at Peak Orthodontics.

Braces can help you achieve a more confident, balanced smile. Not only do they correct alignment issues, but they can improve your health by making it easier to clean your teeth properly.

There are two main kinds of braces that are popular choices in New Zealand: clear braces and metal braces. Each option has its own unique benefits and considerations. We offer both of these solutions at Peak Orthodontics to ensure your braces are effective, efficient and look great.

In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the different types of orthodontic treatments available so you can make an informed decision for your smile.

How Much Will Your Braces Cost?

The overall cost of your braces will depend on your specific situation. How much tooth movement you need, your age and the length of your treatment will all affect how much your treatment costs. We focus on providing our patients with affordable, effective treatments. For more information on pricing, please visit our financing page.

Clear Braces

Clear braces, also known as ceramic braces, are similar to metal braces, except they are made of ceramic and coloured to blend in with your teeth.

Pros:

  • Discreet Appearance: Clear braces offer a subtle and less noticeable appearance when compared to metal braces. Some patients may feel self-conscious about their braces, so this choice can boost your self-esteem while providing you with the results you want.
  • Effective: Ceramic braces can effectively treat a wide range of orthodontic issues.
  • Customisable: Clear or colourful elastomeric bands can be used with ceramic braces, allowing for personalisation.

Cons:

  • Higher Cost: Clear braces tend to cost more than metal braces due to the cost of the materials involved. At Peak Orthodontics, clear brackets are provided for the upper front teeth at no additional cost.
  • Lower Durability: Ceramic brackets may be more prone to chipping or cracking compared to metal brackets. Due to this, we only use ceramic brackets for the upper front teeth at Peak Orthodontics.
  • Potential for Staining: Clear elastomeric bands or modules used to attach the wires to ceramic braces can be prone to staining. Due to this, at Peak Orthodontics, we only use self-ligating brackets, which do not require elastic modules.

Metal Braces

Metal braces are the traditional option, made of high-quality stainless steel brackets and wires. Metal braces are ideal for clients of all ages, from youths to adults, being robust and highly effective in achieving desired results.

Pros:

  • Effective: Metal braces are highly effective in treating complex orthodontic issues, including severe misalignments.
  • High Durability: The metal brackets and wires used are very durable and resistant to damage.
  • Ability to Customise: You can choose different coloured elastomeric bands to add a touch of personalisation to your braces.

Cons:

  • Visibility: Metal braces are the most noticeable type of braces. At Peak Orthodontics, clear brackets are provided for the upper front teeth for excellent aesthetics.
  • Mouth Irritation: Metal brackets and wires may be irritating to the cheeks and lips, particularly early on in treatment. Discomfort can be properly managed with over-the-counter pain relievers or orthodontic wax. Low-profile, self-ligating brackets are used at Peak Orthodontics to maximise comfort.
  • Oral Hygiene Challenges: Cleaning around the brackets and wires takes time and extra effort to maintain good oral hygiene. Peak Orthodontics’ self-ligating brackets are easy to clean as there are no elastomeric bands or ties to clean around.
  • Dietary Restrictions: Certain foods, such as sticky or hard foods, may need to be avoided to prevent damage to braces.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners, such as Invisalign, are a popular choice for patients seeking a nearly invisible orthodontic treatment. It utilises a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually straighten the teeth. Orthodontists’ expertise in diagnosis, treatment planning and supervision is essential for achieving successful results and a properly aligned smile.

Pros:

  • Invisibility: Clear aligners are virtually invisible, making them an ideal choice for patients who want a discreet treatment option.
  • Removability: The ability to remove the aligners allows for easier oral hygiene maintenance and the freedom to eat and drink without restrictions.
  • Comfort: Clear aligners are made of smooth plastic, reducing the likelihood of gum and cheek irritation. The adjustment increments of the teeth with each new aligner are generally much smaller than the increments when adjusting braces, which also adds to the comfort of using aligners.
  • Predictable Results: Clear aligner treatment uses advanced computer technology to plan and predict the movement of your teeth, providing accurate and predictable results.

Cons:

  • Compliance: Clear aligners must be worn for at least 20-22 hours a day to achieve optimal results. Compliance is essential for the success of the treatment, so if you don’t think you can comply with the wearing instructions, then they will not be a suitable choice.
  • Not Suitable for Complex Cases: Clear aligners may not be suitable for all severe orthodontic issues or cases requiring significant tooth rotation. It may be possible to have a hybrid mix of clear aligners and fixed braces in these situations.
  • Speech Impediment: Some patients may experience a temporary lisp or speech impediment for a day or two during the initial adjustment period with clear aligners.

Choosing The Right Kind Of Braces For You

Selecting the most suitable type of orthodontic treatment for your specific needs requires careful consideration. Here are some factors to keep in mind when making your decision:

  • The Severity of Dental Issues: Some types of braces are better suited for more complex cases, while others are suitable for milder misalignments.
  • Aesthetic Preferences: Consider how visible you want your braces to be during treatment. Options like ceramic braces and clear aligners like Invisalign offer more discreet options.
  • Lifestyle and Maintenance: Evaluate the level of commitment required for each type of braces, including cleaning, dietary restrictions and follow-up appointments.
  • Orthodontist’s Recommendation: Consult with Dr John Perry, who can assess your specific case and provide recommendations based on his expertise.

At Peak Orthodontics, we are always here to talk you through the different options, assisting you with making a confident, informed decision for your future smile.
